How far can you recall a memory into your childhood? Can you remember the setting, the sounds, what you were wearing, how you felt?
I have a hard time recalling memories from my very early years but thankfully we have photos to look back on and reflect on some of those fuzzier moments.
I can recall all those times that I ran off playing in the backyard with my younger brother in Southern California. We both loved animals and we always had many around our home. Some were ours and some were the neighbors, but we loved playing with them as much as we could during the warm summer days.
I had a bunny named, “Princess”, whom I especially loved in particular. She was a black beauty and we would take her with us everywhere we could. I used to take her down to our fort that we built amongst the trees. There she would run and play while I looked for my hidden box behind the tree, a box with my favorite things in it to hide from my brother. In my special box, I kept Tootsie Pops, Barbie dolls and some special stickers I used to collect with sparkly unicorns on them.
Us kids all used to fight over the Tootsie Pops that had the Indian shooting his arrow to a small star that was featured on the wrapper. Our local convenience store owner, Henry, would tell us kids that if we brought in a wrapper with a star on it, he would give us another free Tootsie Pop. I felt like the luckiest girl in the world when my wrapper had a star on it. It meant that once we were finished, we would surely get another!
The best part with both the first and second Tootsie Pop was how we knew each time, if we licked long enough (or sometimes, bit), we’d get to that delicious chocolaty center.
What’s your favorite childhood memory?
