Lindsay’s Tea Party has tried just about all the tea rooms in San Diego time and time again. Yet, recently, I experienced a “hidden gem” of a tea house and I am giddy with excitement to share it with you all! Of all the afternoon tea parties I’ve been to here in San Diego, this is the first authentic English afternoon tea I’ve ever had at Shakespeares Corner Shoppe and Afternoon Tea, located off India Street, it is upstairs near the pub for those of you familiar with the shopping center.  SIgn

The owner, Selina, is originally from Surrey in the United Kingdom. She has fabulously recreated an authentic British tea experience for locals to appreciate and enjoy. The monthly changed menu includes British favorites like:
Starter: Welsh rarebit with Irish Stout mustard

Main Course:3 tiered tray

Egg Salad with cress
Cucumber with mint butter
Asparagus, ham & goat cheese.
Salmon mousse (Downtown Abbey favourite)

Mini Sausage roll with Branston pickle

Desserts:
Earl Grey Truffle
Sweet Wine Syllabub
Cornish Fairing
Banoffee Pie
Lemon Crunch CakeThe featured tea this month is the Cream Earl Grey it is a house favourite and has a slight twist on the old classic, a black tea with bergamot and creamy overtones.
I chose the WHITE COCONUT CRÈME  Tea (also available for sale in bulk in the shoppe) – A white tea blended with coconut, safflowers, and cornflowers. A sweet creamy texture with a light body, and all the goodness of white tea. It was divine tasting. Almost tasted like I was drinking a dessert.
The afternoon tea is $23.95 and there is also a lovely children’s tea menu option for only $14.95.
Child’s Afternoon Tea(12 And Under)
Cheese Straw, Fresh-baked Sausage Roll, Assortment of finger sandwiches, Scone with Double Devon Cream & Jam, Cakes & Biscuit, Fruit, Pot of Tea, Cadburys Hot Chocolate, Juice or Milk.
Addy tea
Our party tremendously enjoyed the afternoon tea experience. My daughter chose a British police bear to bring home as a souvenir to commemorate the day. I chose to purchase 3 kinds of scones (you take home to bake and serve warm), they come frozen in packs of 4. The scone flavors were plentiful and it was a tough decision, hence my purchasing of 3 kinds! The one’s we were served with afternoon teas were warm and fluffy, not to sweet, and served with freshly made Devonshire cream.

SPECIALTY SCONES – Orange & Sultana, Cherry Almond,

Raspberry white chocolate, Strawberry Vanilla, Lemon coconut,

Blackberry Cream, Butterscotch, Gluten free raisin

All for $6.99 for a 4 pack (frozen). Addy eating tea sandwich

The British afternoon tea meal is noticeably less sweeter than some of the more Americanized afternoon tea menus and it came much appreciated to my palate. This is true to the way of preparing and taking tea across the pond.

The Shoppe is filled with a vast array of British faire, foods, candies, teaware, English China, a vast variety of teas, Downton Abbey themed products and lots of honorary products to the Queen.  I found many treasures to add to my tea collection and left with some of my favorite teas (both loose and bagged). They carry all my favorite English tea brands as well! I was in heaven!!

Now it’s your turn to go and have a traditional English afternoon tea party! One lucky LTP reader will win a GIFT CERTIFICATE FOR A TEA PARTY FOR 2 PPL at Shakespeares Corner Shoppe and Afternoon Tea.

Cheers and good luck!

  1. I would love to take one of my friends and/or my youngest son (2).. We love tea and food/snacks 🙂

  2. I would take my six year old I think she would love it! And maybe bring along my other daughters (4 and 8) too. Or do a separate mommy daughter date for each one on one is nice and more tea for me too 🙂

  3. I would bring my twin daughters with me! This sounds wonderful:) I will be liking their Facebook page as well. Thanks!

  4. I would take my five year old daughter. We are always playing “tea party” at home and I just know she would love it. 🙂

  5. I’ve already taken my daughter here and we both loved it. I’d take our surrogate grandmother, Mary Lynn, who loves Aubrey Rose but should try this place for it’s incredible tea and treats! PS I bought their frozen scones and baked them up for my own in-home tea party and everyone raved about them!

  6. I love tea! My daughter has been wanting a mother daughter date so I would definitely take her! Our last date before my son came was a tea party in Balboa Park. So it’s something special we share 😉

  7. Love their tea shoppe! Would bring my favorite British lady, Teresa with me. Hope to one day have tea with her in England. For now beautiful San Diego will have to do until then!
